Remarks by Ambassador Gui Congyou at the Reception Marking the 68th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China

(29 September 2017, Stockholm, Sweden)

Your Excellency Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Isabella Lövin,

Excellencies, Dear guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the reception to mark the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. I would like to sincerely thank all of you for your presence.

Time flies fast. In the past 68 years, China has gone through remarkable changes in all respects, which has drawn world-wide attention. China has shaken off dire poverty and become the world's second largest economy. The life of its 1.3 billion-plus people have been significantly improved, and more than 700 million people have been lifted out of poverty. Over the past 5 years, China has registered an average GDP growth of 7.2% annually. A total of 65 million new jobs have been added, and registered urban unemployment rate has stabilized at 4%. Since 2013, poverty-stricken population has dropped by 55.64 million, which equals the size of a major European country. The high-speed railways, electronic payment, shared bicycles and online-shopping, which are selected by young people from 20 countries as the new four great inventions of China, are transforming the daily life of the Chinese people.

The development and prosperity of China is good news for the rest of the world. As the World Bank estimated, China is the most powerful engine of world economic growth, with a contribution of 31.6% by average from 2013 to 2016, exceeding the total of contributions from the United States, the Euro region and Japan. China is the world's largest outbound tourism market. Last year, Chinese people have made over 122 million visits abroad with total consumption of 109.8 billion US dollars. China is also the world's largest investor in clean energy, and the largest producer and market of new energy vehicles. In 2016, total investment in clean energy was 87.8 billion US dollars, and half a million new energy vehicles were made and sold in China. In international arena, we have embraced openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation. The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation was successfully held, which was attended by more than 1500 delegates from over 130 countries and 70 international organizations, and yielded 270 detailed outcomes in 76 items and 5 key areas. The Belt and Road has become an important international public product provided by China to the world for common prosperity. We have worked with the international community including Sweden to fulfil our commitments to the Paris Agreement and jointly tackle climate change, terrorism and other global challenges and international hotspot issues, making great contribution to maintaining world peace and stability.

Next month, the Communist Party of China will convene its 19th National Congress. It is a very important meeting to be held at a critical stage when China is striving for achieving the final victory of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way, and at a critical time for the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The Congress will examine the development trend of the world and China and take into account new requirements for the country's development and new expectations from the people, and summarize the experience the Party has gained from leading the people to advance the reform and opening up and modernization. The Congress will continue to implement the people-oriented development thought, and draw a strategic plan for the causes of the Party and the country. Through this Congress, the CPC will lead the the Chinese people in a united and persistent effort to achieve the final victory of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way, constantly open new prospect for socialism with Chinese characteristics, and continue to create better life for the people.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends,

We have always remembered that Sweden was the first western country to establish diplomatic relations with China. We deeply admire the leaders of Sweden at that time for their political courage and strategic vision. After the start of China's reform and opening-up, Sweden went on to become the first western country to sign a trade agreement and investment protection agreement with China, and stepped up economic and technological cooperation between our two countries. We will never forget the positive contribution Sweden has made for China's economic and social development.

Looking into the future, the potential is huge for mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Sweden in various fields. Our two countries share a similar development philosophy, as both countries are speeding up innovative and green development and vigorously building an open economy. In the coming five years, China will import over eight trillion US dollars of goods, make more than 750 billion US dollars of outbound investment, and Chinese tourists will make 500 million plus outbound visits.

Last June, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven attended the Summer Davos Forum in China. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang held meeting and talks with him, and reached important consensus on increasing mutual understanding and deepening practical cooperation in various areas on the basis of equality and mutual respect. China-Sweden relations are facing new important opportunities for development. The Chinese side stands ready to work with Swedish friends to stay true to our original aspirations when we established diplomatic relations, maintain the political foundation of the bilateral relations, increase mutual understanding between our peoples, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas and jointly create a more splendid future of China-Sweden relations.

Now, may I invite you to join me in a toast,

To the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China!

To the development and prosperity of China and Sweden!

To a better future of China-Sweden relations!

To the health of friends present!
