Chinese Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on Swedish Foreign Minister's False Statement Regarding Hong Kong
2020/07/15

During the recent EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting, the Foreign Minister of Sweden made false statement regarding the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong SAR. We firmly oppose her statement and would like to reiterate the relevant facts and our solemn positions.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, and Hong Kong’s affairs are purely China’s internal affairs, which allows no interference by any external forces in any way with any excuse. The Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong SAR fully complies with China’s Constitution and the Basic Law of Hong Kong. It is completely in keeping with the principle of rule of law and the international common practice. EU countries, Sweden included, all have their own national security legislations, the clauses of which are in essence the same as the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong. The implementation of this law will only further improve the legal system in Hong Kong, ensure a more stable social order, create an more favorable business environment, better protect the rights enjoyed by Hong Kong residents stipulated in the laws, and ensure better development of the cause of “One Country, Two Systems”. Anyone who truly support “One Country, Two Systems” and Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability will support the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong SAR.

The Chinese Government is steadfast in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security and development interests, implementing “One Country, Two Systems”, and opposing interference in Hong Kong affairs by external forces. Any attempts by external forces to pressure China will never succeed, and will only hurt themselves. We hope that the Swedish side will respect China’s sovereignty and China’s legitimate right to safeguard national security on its own territory in accordance with law, hold an objective and fair attitude towards the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong SAR, avoid practicing double standard, and refrain from interfering in Hong Kong related issues and China’s internal affairs in any manner.
