Chinese Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on Swedish Media's Reporting of Sayragul Sauytbay's Lies
2020/07/07

In recent days some Swedish media again hyped up issues related to China’s Xinjiang and spread lies by Sayragul Sauytbay. What they say are total fabrications and smear and slander against China, which we firmly oppose. We would like to state the related facts as follows.

There are no such things as “concentration camps” or “forced sterilization” in Xinjiang. Xinjiang once suffered severely from extremism and terrorism. The local government has taken a series of effective measures to counter terrorism and eradicate extremism, including setting up vocational education and training institutions, so as to remove the breeding ground for extremism and terrorism. Those measures have gained positive results. Xinjiang hasn’t seen a single violent terrorist incident over the past more than three years, and people’s right to life, development and well-being has been effectively safeguarded. By the end of 2019, all trainees in the vocational education and training institutions have completed their de-radicalization courses, and got employed and lived a peaceful life with the help of local government.

The Chinese Government always protects the legitimate rights and interests of all ethnic groups on an equal basis, ethnic minorities included. All ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs, enjoy preferential population policy support. From 1978 to 2018, the population of Uyghurs in Xinjiang rose from 5.55million to 11.68 million, accounting for 46.8% of the total population in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The Uyghur population is 2.1 times of that of 40 years ago. If there is “forced sterilization” , how come there is a big increase in Uyghur population?

Sayragul Sauytbay is a fugitive and liar. She never worked in any vocational education and training institutions, and had never been detained before she illegally fled to Kazakhstan. In April 2016, she became the principal of a kindergarten in Chahanwusong Town, Zhaosu County, Yili Prefecture in Xinjiang. In March 2018, she was removed from the position for incompetence and infringement on other teachers’ interests to gain bonus, and was transferred to the local primary school. Sayragul is suspected of committing fraud, and still has unpaid debt. In order to evade legal punishment, she fled China and fabricated a large number of lies to defame Xinjiang. Such despicable actions render her of no credibility at all.

We want to stress again that Xinjiang-related issues are not about human rights, ethnicity or religion, but rather issues of counter terrorism and anti-separation. Terrorism and extremism are common enemy of all mankind. On issues concerning counter terrorism and de-radicalization, we need to respect facts, reject bias and avoid deliberate distortion and stigmatization which goes against international justice and human conscience. It is hoped that Swedish media will not be deceived by lies, report China and Xinjiang objectively and fairly, and avoid becoming spokesperson and mouthpiece for criminal.
