Distinguished Deputy Mayor of Uppsala Stefan Hanna,

Distinguished Deputy Mayor Mohamad Hassan,

Distinguished Director of the Enterprise Section of Uppsala City Cecilia Linde,

Distinguished Director of the Uppsala Regional Export Center Linus Andersson,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Dear Entrepreneurs and start-up businessers,

Good afternoon.

I have been to Uppsala many times, both on private and official trips, and I was deeply impressed by its clean environment, vibrant economy and world-leading innovation and technologies. I was also impressed by the close cooperation between China and Uppsala and the friendship of its people towards China. The cooperation between Uppsala and China is a miniature of the cooperation between China and Sweden.

China and Sweden have long enjoyed friendly cooperation. Sweden is the first Western country to establish diplomatic ties with China, and one of the first Western countries to trade with China. When China adopted reform and opening-up 40 years ago, Sweden was one of the first Western countries to sign economic, trade and technological cooperation agreements with China, making important contributions to China’s modernization. Chinese people have always had a deep bond with the Swedish people, and they welcome greater friendly cooperation between our two countries.

Forty years into China’s reform and opening-up, enormous developments on social, political and economic fronts brought historic changes to the country. All of the Swedish friends that have been to China saw this first-hand, and they are willing to contribute to further friendly exchanges and cooperation in various areas. However, there are also some Swedish people whose impressions of China are far from reality, as they have never been to China. In fact, China is not what it was like 69 years ago before the country’s liberation, and China is not what it was like 40 years ago before reform and opening-up.We sincerely welcome those in Sweden that have not been to China before to visit China, see what China is really like and experience China’s significant transformation, so that their views on China can keep pace with reality. We have several young Swedish entrepreneurs here that started “Explore China”, a project that helps Swedish university students learn more about China by sponsoring them to visit China, which is very meaningful.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

The 19th CPC National Congress held last October established the Xi Jinping thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics and outlined the blueprint for China’s development: lift all of the 30 million people still under the poverty line out of poverty and finish the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects; basically realize socialist modernization by 2035; and develop China into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful by the middle of this century. The 19th CPC National Congress marks China’s entry into a new development era, one that is characterized by high-quality development and a better life enjoyed by the nearly 1.4 billion Chinese people. To this end,the CPC is implementing a new development vision featuring innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development, and primarily innovation driven. We are working to build China into a country of innovators, and a massive wave of entrepreneurship and innovation is sweeping the country. China now leads the world in R&D fund committed by the government and the number of patents and science and technology papers. In China, mass entrepreneurship and innovation is gaining momentum.

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends,

The founding of the new China 69 years ago marked the beginning of a new chapter of China-Sweden relations. The implementation of reform and opening-up 40 years ago lent momentum to the growth of our relations and common development. Now, new opportunities are generated for our two countries to achieve further progress and prosperity, thanks to China’s pursuit of the new development vision. The Uppsala-China Start-up Forum hosted by the Swedish friends today demonstrates the vision of its organizers, as it will play a very positive role in promoting innovation cooperation between our two countries.

I would like to express sincere thanks to the Swedish friends for your efforts, and I wish every success for the Uppsala-China Start-up Forum.

Thank you!
