Congratulatory Message by Ambassador Gui Congyou to the China (Sichuan)-Sweden Economic and Trade Cooperation Conference
2018/10/22

Distinguished Deputy Party Secretary Deng Xiaogang,

Distinguished State Secretary Niklas Johansson,

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

Good morning. I would like to express my heart-felt congratulations on the China (Sichuan)-Sweden Economic and Trade Cooperation Conference. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, Let me extend warm welcome to the guests and friends.

The Swedish friends here are all connected to China. Naturally you are interested in the prospects of China’s economic economic development and trade, and you would like to get some updates on current and future economic cooperation between China and Sweden. First, let me say a few words on that.

It has been 40 years since China implemented reform and opening-up. Over the past 40 years, China achieved significant economic development, which was recognized around the world. Today, the size of China’s economy and trade is the second largest in the world. China is also the world’s biggest exporter and manufacturer. Since the beginning of this year, China has maintained steady economic growth, with consumption as a primary growth driver. We are implementing an innovation-driven development strategy, which nurtured continuous growth of new growth drivers, contributing to 2/3 of job creation. In the first half of 2018, China’s GDP reached 42 trillion yuan, up 6.8% year on year. Growth in the third quarter is expected to be within a reasonable range. In the first six months of this year, trade in goods of China reached USD 14.12 trillion, up 7.9%. Export increased by 4.9%, and import went up by 11.5%. China’s trade surplus dropped by 26.7%, standing at 9.0132 million yuan. Facing rising complexities and uncertainties in the world, China is under increasing downward pressure. But China has the determination and ability to handle the risks and challenges, make good use of targeted measures and prevent major fluctuations of the economy. We are confident to meet the targets of social and economic development this year, maintain medium-to-high speed of growth and achieve high-quality development. As you know, reform and opening up is our basic national policy. Just like Sweden and many other countries, China is a beneficiary and supporter of economic globalization. In a world where uncertainties are on the rise, it is ever more important for China and Sweden to work together against all forms of protectionism and promote open market, free trade and fair market access.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

China and Sweden have a long history of friendly cooperation. Sweden is the first Western country to establish diplomatic ties with China. During the 68 years of diplomatic relations, with the joint efforts of our governments and business communities, economic and trade cooperation continued to make new progress. Bilateral trade grew rapidly from January to August this year, reaching USD 1.16 billion, up 16% compared with last year. What should draw our attention is that China’s imports from Sweden came near USD 6.3 billion, up 23%. This is a continuation of the momentum since last year Sweden stood on the surplus side of trade with China for the first time. It is also proof that the popularity of Swedish high-quality products is rising in China. In the first half of this November, the first China International Import Expo will be held in Shanghai. Sweden will send a delegation with over 200 people to the national pavilion and company pavilion of the Expo. That is also proof that economic and trade relations between China and Sweden are becoming more vibrant and sound.

I would also like to use this opportunity to stress that China and Sweden’s economies are highly complementary, which presents significant development potential. Deepening sound and sustainable bilateral economic and trade cooperation is in the interest of both our countries. Sichuan Province has abundant resources, a large population and a dynamic economy. Many companies in Sichuan are very innovative and have a global vision. We hope that the companies from Sichuan and Sweden will work with each other in a spirit of openness and win-win cooperation, and bring bilateral economic and trade cooperation across the board to a new level.

I would like to conclude by wishing this meeting a great success.

Thank you!
