Chinese Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on Upsala Nya Tidning's Article About China
2018/10/11

The Upsala Nya Tidning (UNT) published an article on China’s Xinjiang on 8 Oct. The article lodged unfounded attacks on China’s policy in Xinjiang, and contained distorted facts and smears about the region. The content of the article is full of lies and bias against China and constitutes an attempt to maliciously smear China, which is totally unacceptable. The Embassy has sent a letter to Upsala Nya Tidning to express firm opposition, and present China’s positions as follows:

The Chinese Government attaches great importance to maintaining Xinjiang’s stability and promoting economic and social development in Xinjiang. We uphold equality among all ethnic groups, protect the freedom of religious belief and the rights of cultural inheritance of people of all ethnicity, and at the same time resolutely fight against religious extremism and terrorism, to promote overall development of Xinjiang. The above efforts have generated remarkable achievements. Xinjiang enjoys overall stability and a sound momentum of economic and social development. People of different ethnic groups live in harmony and are united in a joint endeavour to work for a better life. Economy has grown strongly in Xinjiang, with a 7.6% increase of GDP year-on-year in 2017, which is above the national average.

It is a wish shared by people of all ethnic groups for Xinjiang to maintain enduring social stability, since it serves their fundamental interests. This is the utmost important human rights in Xinjiang. The violent terrorism and ethnic separatist activities are the most serious threat that confronts Xinjiang. The black hand behind these activities are the “East Turkistan” violent terrorist separatist forces represented by the “World Uyghur Conference” and “East Turkestan Islamic Movement”. The series of policy measures implemented in Xinjiang are meant to promote stability, development, solidarity and people’s livelihood. At the same time, these measures aim to combat ethnic separatist activities and violent terrorist crimes in accordance with law, safeguard national security, and protect people’s life and property. All the measures taken are strictly in accordance with the laws and regulations such as the criminal law and anti-terrorism law. To uphold national security in accordance with law is a common practice of all countries. Thanks to these measures, Xinjiang’s social stability has improved significantly, and there has been no terrorist attacks for more than a year. People in Xinjiang now feel much safer and are much more satisfied with social stability. The rights to safety and development of all ethnic groups have been effectively protected.

Xinjiang-related issues are China’s internal affairs. China always opposes the use of Xinjiang-related and religious issues to interfere in China’s internal affairs. Some forces, media and individuals in Sweden have deep-rooted bias against China and distort right and wrong. Their attempts to use Xinjiang-related issues and religious issues to interfere in China’s domestic affairs are doomed to fail. We hope the UNT will report the Xinjiang-related issues in an objective and impartial way, and publish our letter to enable the readers to learn about the true stories of Xinjiang’s development. The Embassy is willing to introduce to the UNT and its readers the development of China’s Xinjiang and the Chinese Government’s policies on Xinjiang, and conduct dialogues on relevant topics in an positive and constructive manner.
