Chinese Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on the Case of Gui Minhai
2018/08/14

We have noticed the reports by Swedish media on 13 August regarding Swedish doctor’s visit to Gui Minhai. As we said before, China and Sweden have maintained close communication on the case of Gui Minhai. China has been handling this case in accordance with Chinese law and safeguarding Gui Minhai’s legitimate rights according to law.

As Swedish media reported, Mr. Fredrik Fällman from the University of Gothenburg said, “China has said Gui Minhai is not ill, and you do not know what they are investigating.” We want to stress that the Chinese side has never said Gui Minhai is not ill. According to the diagnosis from group consultations of Chinese medical experts, he has not suffered amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as alleged by some Swedish media and forces, but rather cervical spondylosis, which is a common condition. Chinese doctors have been providing proper medical service to him. Taking into consideration the Swedish side’s wish, China agreed to a visit by a Swedish doctor to see Gui Minhai. Mr. Fällman’s remarks are recurrent sheer speculation which misleads and cheats the Swedish public. It is hoped that some Swedish people and media will get the facts straight before rushing to comments or news reporting. If they don’t know the facts, they should refrain from making irresponsible comments, even less malicious speculation.
