Ambassador Gui Congyou and His Wife Host Reception Marking the 68 th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China

On 29 September 2017, Ambassador Gui Congyou and his wife Madam Song Jingli hosted the reception marking the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China at the Sheraton Stockholm Hotel. Around 400 guests were present, including Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate Change and Deputy Prime Minister Mrs. Isabella Lövin, State Secretary of Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) Mrs. Annika Söder, First Marshal of the Royal Court Dr. Mats Nilsson, Chief of Training and Development of the Swedish Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Johan Svensson, Former Speaker of the Swedish Parliament Mr. Björn Von Sydow, Acting Head of the International Department at the Swedish Parliament Ms. Maria Elgstrand, Head of Department for Asia and the Pacific Region of MFA Ms. Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin, Head of Department for International Law, Human Right and Treaty Law of MFA Mr. Gustaf Lind, Acting Chief of Protocol of MFA Ms. Anna Block Mazoyer, and representatives from various sectors of Swedish society, foreign Ambassadors in Sweden, as well as representatives of local Chinese community, Chinese institutions and students.

Ambassador Gui delivered warm remarks. He said in the past 68 years since its founding, the People's Republic of China has shaken off dire poverty and become the world's second largest economy. The life of its 1.3 billion-plus people have been significantly improved, and more than 700 million people have been lifted out of poverty. Over the past 5 years, China has registered an average GDP growth of 7.2% annually and has been the most powerful engine of world economic growth. Technological innovations represented by the "new four great inventions" - high-speed railways, electronic payment, shared bicycles and online-shopping are bringing about radical changes across China and the world. China is the world's largest outbound tourism market, the world's largest investor in clean energy, and the largest producer and market of new energy vehicles. China has embraced openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation in international arena and successfully held the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The Belt and Road has become an important international public product provided by China to the world for common prosperity. China has worked with the international community including Sweden to fulfil its commitments to the Paris Agreement and jointly tackle climate change, terrorism and other global challenges and international hotspot issues, making great contribution to maintaining world peace and stability.

Ambassador Gui said that next month the Communist Party of China will convene its 19th National Congress which is a very important meeting to be held at a critical stage when China is striving for achieving the final victory of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way, and at a critical time for the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Through this Congress, the CPC will lead the Chinese people in a united and persistent effort to achieve the final victory of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way, constantly open new prospect for socialism with Chinese characteristics, and continue to create better life for the people.

Ambassador Gui spoke highly of China-Sweden relations. He said that Sweden was the first western country to establish diplomatic relations with China and the political courage and strategic vision of the leaders of Sweden at that time were admirable. Looking into the future, the potential is huge for mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Sweden in various fields. The Chinese side stands ready to work with Swedish friends to stay true to the original aspirations when they established diplomatic relations, maintain the political foundation of the bilateral relations, increase mutual understanding between the two peoples, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas and jointly create a more splendid future of China-Sweden relations.

Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate Change Mrs. Isabella Lövin said in her speech that the friendly relations between Sweden China have developed rapidly with frequent exchanges and close cooperation in various fields. She said Sweden put great value on its friendly cooperation with China, highly appreciated China's firm support for the Paris Agreement, and admired China's effort in tackling climate change, improving environment governance, pursuing sustainable development and meeting other global and regional challenges, as well as China's leading role in multilateral cooperation such as the United Nations. She said that Sweden would continue to strengthen communication, enhancing high-level exchanges, and deepening practical cooperation in various areas with China in a joint effort to push forward the bilateral relations.

The reception was immersed in a solemn, friendly and warm atmosphere. Guests said the reception hosted by Ambassador Gui and his wife demonstrated China's image as a major country, and expressed warm congratulation on China's great development achievements and best wishes for the further development of China-Sweden relations.
