Letter by Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Sweden to SVD Regarding the Wrong Statements by Some Swedish Politicians on Taiwan-related Issues

SVD recently published an article by several Liberalerna politicians. The article uses Taiwan-related issues and the pandemic for political plays and goes against facts and morality, which should be condemned and rejected.

We hope to inform these people who work in European and Swedish legislatures some common knowledge of international law: There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. The one China principle, adopted by Resolution 2758 of United Nations General Assembly in 1971, is a well-recognized principle for international relations and general consensus of the international community. The EU including Sweden unequivocally follows the one China principle, does not recognize Taiwan as a "state" and opposes "Taiwan independence". The WHO is a specialized UN agency composed of sovereign states, and naturally the Taiwan region is not eligible to join the WHO. This is the most basic common sense and plain fact.

No one cares more about the well-being of compatriots in Taiwan than the Central Government of China. After the epidemic broke out in the mainland of China, the Central Government promptly informed the Taiwan region of the situation. As early as mid-January, experts from the Taiwan region paid a field visit to Wuhan, had discussions with mainland experts and gained first-hand information. In fact, per the agreement reached between China and the WHO, there are International Health Regulations contact points in Taiwan. The Taiwan region can obtain timely information on global public health emergencies released by the WHO, and the Taiwan region can report their public health emergency information to the WHO as well. These arrangements ensure that the Taiwan region can respond to public health emergencies in a timely and effective manner wherever these emergencies occur. The accusations and attacks by these few politicians on China and the WHO are not factual and unjustified.

China's prompt and decisive efforts against COVID-19 bought the world precious time, which is widely acknowledged by the international community. At a time when the pandemic is hitting many countries in the world, China, with a commitment to a community with a shared future for humankind, actively participates in global cooperation and does its best to provide help to countries badly hit by the pandemic. As long as it helps to curb the pandemic, we will continue to do so. This is why the international community speaks highly of China, not because of some "publicity campaign".

We don't know what these politicians did for combating COVID-19 in Sweden and the world, but what we know is that when the world is uniting as one to fight the pandemic, they are still trying to go for tricks of politicization and stigmatization, politically manipulate Taiwan-related issues and slander China's efforts to fight the pandemic. It fully exposes their bias and discrimination, and undermines the global cooperation to defeat the pandemic. What they did stands against the trend of history, and is bound to be cast away by history. We advise them to reflect on their words and deeds, and really do something to help the fight on the pandemic and benefit the well-being of humanity.
