Remarks by Ambassador Gui Congyou at the Reception Marking the Mid-Autumn Festival and His Assumption of Office for the Chinese Community in Sweden
(4 October 2017, Stockholm)
2017/10/16

My fellow overseas countrymen,

Dear students and friends,

A warm welcome to the Chinese Embassy!

A full moon in the sky makes thousands of miles on earth alight. I am delighted to join you in the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also called the reunion festival, as fullness of the moon symbolizes people's reunion. At this beautiful moment, I'd like to, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, extend my sincere greetings and best wishes to you and through you, to the local Chinese community, all staff of Chinese institutions and students who live, work or study in Sweden.

The Chinese community in Sweden has all along stayed attached to the motherland. You have fully exploited your knowledge of both China and Sweden, and made vigorous efforts and unique contribution to China-Sweden friendly cooperation. The Chinese institutions rallied by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sweden as well as the local Chinese students have not only achieved success in their work and study, but also actively participated in various friendly exchanges between China and Sweden. They have become an important force in fostering China-Sweden friendship.

Our Party and the State have always attached great importance to the work concerning overseas Chinese. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core has drawn an important strategic plan for the work concerning overseas Chinese, emphasizing that overseas Chinese, Chinese institutions and students are important forces in realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In another half month, the 19th CPC National Congress will be held. Under new circumstances, the Embassy will fully implement the CPC Central Committee's guidelines and policies on our work concerning overseas Chinese. The theme can be summarized in two words: close and clean.

First, we should have close ties with the local Chinese community. From a broader perspective, we are all descendants of the Chinese nation and are a big loving family. All of you here, whether you have gained the Swedish citizenship or not, have a Chinese heritage in you. In a micro sense, though we are from different parts of China in pursuit of our own dreams, we have now met in Sweden. We value our bonds and friendship with all overseas Chinese, and will have more contacts and exchanges with you to develop a closer and more intimate relationship.

More specifically, the Embassy will care for the overseas Chinese in Sweden and help you develop and grow in Sweden. Especially when you encounter difficulties, for example with visas and passports, we will take proactive measures to help you. We will do more to introduce to you China's latest economic and social achievements and help you stay tuned in to domestic developments. We encourage you and will provide guidance for you to grasp the rare historic opportunity of the Belt and Road Initiative, and return to China to do business or start ventures. We will give you our full backing in your undertakings. We value the role of overseas Chinese organizations as a bridge between China and Sweden, and pay close attention to the development of every organization. The Embassy will provide support for and take active part in all good activities held by the local Chinese community. We will give full play to the overseas Chinese' strength of knowing and understanding Sweden, and solicit your opinions more often in our diplomatic work. We hope that the large group of overseas Chinese will contribute more to our work with your advice and dedication.

Second, our contact should be clean. The Embassy is willing to make contacts with each and every patriotic one of the overseas Chinese community as well as individuals. We will treat you friendly with no prejudice. But the contacts between the overseas Chinese and the Embassy as well as the personal relationship between the overseas Chinese and the Embassy staff and their family should be clean. Please supervise us in this regard.

Dear compatriots, students and friends, under the great leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, the great cause of China's modernization has made remarkable achievements, attracting worldwide attention. China has never been so close to the center of the world stage, so close to fulfilling the Chinese dream of national renewal, and so confident and able to realize this goal. I hope all the overseas Chinese can unite together and steadfastly support our country's unification cause and efforts in maintaining social stability and promoting development, and resolutely oppose all anti-China separatist activities in any form by anyone at any place. We hope the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sweden will strengthen communication and consultation with all walks of life especially the business sector in Sweden, deepen practical cooperation between the two sides, actively reward the local community, and make greater contribution to the development and prosperity of China and Sweden. We hope that the students will study hard and be committed to innovation. We welcome and support you to start career in Sweden or pursue development in China after graduation.

Dear compatriots, students and friends, let us keep our original aspirations in mind and join hands to forge ahead, for the fulfillment of China's two centenary goals and the realization of the Chinese dream of national renewal.

As the old saying goes, on festive occasions more than ever one thinks of his dear ones far away. Now, may I invite you to join me in a toast,

To the prosperity of our motherland!

To the happiness and well-being of our relatives back home!

Cheers!

Thank you all.
